Dr Petra Johana Poncarová Has Been Awarded Prestegious ERC Starting Grant for the Research into Celtic Languages
The awarded project, “NUDGERS: New Users of Minoritised Languages as Writers and Cultural Agent,” examines the phenomenon of the growing number of new speakers across all Celtic languages – people who, in recent decades, have learnt these languages on their own initiative, without having any family ties to them. Using six Celtic languages as examples – Breton, Irish, Cornish, Manx, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh – the researcher and her team will seek to gain a better understanding of how these new speakers have influenced the spread of these small languages and cultures.

The translator and literary scholar, Dr Petra Johana Poncarová, works at the Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and cooperates on CoRe’s Research Project 2 – Conflict of Identities. Her research focuses on modern Scottish literature, particularly that written in Scottish Gaelic.
