Introduction to the Politics of Non-European Regions: A New Seminar within the CoRe Project
The seminar taught at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (CU FA), introduces students to social-science perspectives on political studies of African, Asia-Pacific, and Latin-American regions. It is led by Dr Radek Buben from the Centre for Ibero-American Studies at CU FA and forms part of the popularising and educational activities of the CoRe: Beyond Security research project.

The syllabus of the seminar focuses on the analysis of conflicts, democratic backsliding, autocratisation, and radicalisation in the non-European world. As an introductory and overview seminar, it addresses a wide range of topics, including:
- States and regimes: definitions, approaches, classifications, and datasets.
- Issues of state and statehood outside Europe: colonial and post-colonial states. State-building and nation-building.
- Types of political regimes: democracy, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, and hybrid regimes.
- The military in politics and politics in the military.
- Problems of democratisation.
- Politics in ethnically, nationally, and religiously divided societies.
- Institutional models of political regimes: presidentialism, semi-presidentialism, parliamentarism, and federalism.
- Electoral systems.
The seminar titled “Úvod do politiky mimoevropských oblastí” is conducted in Czech.
