Auditory Perceptual Simulation (APS) is a name for the phenomenon experienced by many readers whereby they imagine or “hear” a voice internally while reading silently. This voice might be their own or that of a character in the text or someone else – perhaps someone well known to them, including the author. In this talk, Prof Christianson describes a number of empirical APS-related empirical findings, and speculates on the potential of APS as a psycholinguistic and pedagogical tool.
