Prague Summer School of Papyrology
The conference will be held at the National Library of the Czech Republic (Mariánské nám. 190/5, Prague 1, 110 00) on 1–5 September 2025.
The first summer school of papyrology took place from 1–5 September 2025 at the National Library of the Czech Republic (Mariánské nám. 190/5, Prague 1, 110 00). Experts from the universities of Heidelberg, Macquarie, Warsaw, and University College London jointly prepared a program that included Greek, Coptic, and Latin palaeography of papyri, ostraca, and inscriptions.
Students translated from Ancient Greek and Latin, deciphered papyri, visited a restoration workshop, and viewed selected papyrus fragments from the Carl Wessely collection held at the National Library of the Czech Republic. The event also served as a preparatory meeting for the project “PAMELA: Papyri and Manuscripts: Exploring Layers of Ages”, which received support under the Horizon Europe – Staff Exchanges scheme and will officially begin in January 2026.
The summer school was organized by the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (led by Lucie Doležalová, Martin Masliš, and Ondřej Fúsik), in cooperation with the National Library of the Czech Republic as part of the 4EU+, CoRe: Beyond Security, and Strategic Partnerships of Charles University projects. The project involves 17 partners from around the world and will bring deeper research, digitization, and popularization of pre-modern manuscript cultures.
