Latin America in the Labyrinth of Donald Trump: Tariffs, Interventions, Friends & Enemies

12 12 people viewed this event.

Lecture by Dr. Radek Buben, Director of the Center for Ibero-American Studies at Faculty of Arts, Charles University, on the approach of the new US President Donald Trump to the southern neighbors of the United States will be held at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University, on 2 December 2025 at 3:00–4:30 pm.

The arrival of Donald Trump, representative of the new conservative, often pro-evangelical and nativist right, comes at a time when similar policies are being promoted or gaining strength in a number of countries, from El Salvador and Ecuador to Chile and Argentina. At the same time, new tariff barriers and the severing of existing trade ties are enabling a number of Latin American countries to strengthen their economic relations with China, regardless of the political orientation of their governments. The anti-immigration campaign and the growing confrontation with Venezuela are stirring up waves of traditional anti-American resentment, but at the same time giving wings to many of his ideological supporters.
