Barbara Sattler: Space and Place in Aristotle and Early Greek Thought
(Ruhr-Universität Bochum)
It is often claimed that we do not find a conception of space in ancient Greek times, but only of place. Against this assumption I want to show how Aristotle’s account of topos in his Physics can be understood as providing the basis for a full-blown understanding of space. I show how Aristotle develops his account by bringing together different spatial functions investigated in isolation by his predecessors and in discussion with Zeno’s topos paradox.
